Spinal Stenosis Symptoms
Spinal stenosis, which is a narrowing in the spine, can be the result of a bulging disc, torn disc, osteophyte, and many other conditions. All of these conditions involve some type of tissue intruding upon a space in the spine through which a nerve root or the spinal cord must pass.
In some cases the spinal disc, bone, or other type of tissue that's narrowing the area presses upon a nearby nerve root or the spinal canal and causes symptoms. Not everyone with spinal stenosis experiences symptoms and each person experiences them to a different degree, but common symptoms include:
- Pain
- Numbness
- Burning
- Pins and needles
- Headaches
- Muscle spasms
- Weakness
Treatments for Spinal Stenosis Symptoms
The treatment chosen for spinal stenosis varies depending on what is causing the condition. Techniques used for patients with a bone spur may be different than those applied to cases of spinal stenosis that are the result of degenerative disc disease. However, there are some conservative treatments that are often included in treatment regimens for many of the more common conditions, including:
- Prescription or over-the-counter pain medications
- Rest
- Stretching
- Spinal decompression
- Anti-inflammatory medicine
- Spinal steroid shots
- Exercise
- Heat/ice compresses
